Senate Nears Vote to Confirm New CDC Leader

The Senate is set to confirm Erica Schwartz as the new director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Wednesday. Senate Majority Leader John Thune initiated the vote process, potentially ending nearly a year without a permanent leader at the agency.

Schwartz would be the first Senate-confirmed director since Susan Monarez’s dismissal last August, which followed disagreements with Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr concerning vaccine policy. Schwartz cleared the Senate Health Committee with support from Chairman Bill Cassidy, who overcame initial reservations.

Democratic Senator Tim Kaine joined Republicans in approving Schwartz’s nomination. This marks the third nomination attempt under the Trump administration, following former Rep. Dave Weldon’s withdrawal due to insufficient confirmation support and questions regarding his qualifications.

If confirmed, Schwartz will lead an agency facing challenges since President Trump’s term began, including a significant drop in morale and workforce reductions. During her confirmation hearing, Schwartz reassured Cassidy of her ability to protect the agency from political influence and uphold scientific integrity.

“I am confident that she knows what she is doing and will stand against those who don’t,” said Cassidy.

Not all senators supported Schwartz, with Senator Bernie Sanders expressing concern about her ability to confront anti-science sentiment within the administration.
