Shortage of Physicians in Southeastern North Carolina

3 weeks ago 0

The southeastern region of North Carolina is grappling with a critical physician shortage, resulting in patients experiencing extended wait times for medical care.

In February, an incident highlighted the dire situation. A child with no previous medical issues suffered a severe allergic reaction at a rural middle school in North Carolina. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) quickly responded and, following the parent’s request, began transporting the child to a major medical facility in Durham, which was over 30 minutes away.

During the journey, the child’s vital signs deteriorated, prompting a crucial decision. The paramedics redirected to a nearby hospital in Roxboro, only a few minutes away. Upon arrival at the emergency department, the child required several medications and supportive treatments to ensure survival.
