Simon Hayes: From Backup to Starting Quarterback

Senior Simon Hayes has taken a unique path to become Naperville Central High School’s starting quarterback. Unlike the typical journey, Hayes’ road was characterized by challenges and perseverance. Initially, he was the backup on the freshman B team, didn’t start on the sophomore B team, and was a receiver on the junior varsity team with little playtime.

‘It’s an awesome story,’ Coach Mike Ulreich expressed about Hayes’ progress. ‘Unbelievable perseverance. We discussed in the offseason whether he’d continue playing football.’ Hayes, standing at 6-foot-3 and weighing 170 pounds, chose to persist.

Commitment Pays Off

Hayes demonstrated dedication by attending all offseason workouts and practicing regularly during the summer. His efforts were rewarded when he was named a captain by his teammates, signaling his maturity and growth. During his second varsity start, Hayes completed 21 of 28 passes for 269 yards and four touchdowns, leading the Redhawks to a 42-21 victory over Lockport.

It marked Naperville Central’s first home win since November 2024, a time when Hayes’ older brother Sebastian led the team to the Class 8A state semifinals after overcoming two ACL injuries.

Game Strategy and Execution

In their previous loss to Wheaton Warrenville South, the Redhawks struggled during practice. However, things started positively against the Porters. Hayes focused on quick, short passes, completing 14 of his first 16 attempts. His precise 26-yard touchdown pass to sophomore tight end Ian Figi helped build an early 14-0 lead.

‘I put a lot of trust in my coaches and teammates,’ Hayes stated. ‘We worked diligently all week and devised an effective strategy for the game.’ Hayes’ connection with junior running back Ryan Jacobson, aided by his 23-yard touchdown pass, increased the lead to 21-0.

A Strong Team Dynamic

‘Once the ball is in the hands of our receivers, their speed ensures success,’

Hayes explained. The Redhawks excelled with Hayes delivering exceptional performance. Mark Williams praised Hayes:

‘He’s one of the best quarterbacks in high school football. Our summer workouts together were pivotal in his development.’

Williams highlighted the special bond he shares with Hayes, which contributed to his impressive statistics of six catches for 127 yards, with touchdowns of 29 and 43 yards.

With support from Jacobson and senior Landon Nelson, who ran 15 times for 98 yards and scored two touchdowns, Hayes felt confident in his team. ‘Trust in my teammates led us here,’ he acknowledged.

‘Despite the disappointing start last week, the team rallied exceptionally well,’ Hayes expressed his pride in the team’s resilience.

Support and Growth

Coach Ulreich praised Hayes ‘for growing up with amazing family support.’ His parents provided invaluable encouragement throughout his journey. Hayes reflected on his experience, recognizing his coaches as vital mentors.

‘The initial three years had challenges, yet the coaches helped me reach this stage,’ Hayes shared. ‘I’m honored to lead this team.’
