Smithsonian National Zoo’s Emphasis on DEI and Climate Change

1 month ago 0

The Smithsonian National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute in Washington, D.C. hosts around 2 million visitors annually and operates a global conservation research program across more than 40 countries. Recently, the zoo has focused on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) as well as climate change.

Addressing Climate Change and Inequities

A 2021 article by seabird ecologist Autumn-Lynn Harrison and coral biologist Mary Hagedorn highlights how addressing health and education inequities worldwide can bolster climate action. The zoo’s website contains nearly 400 articles on climate change, impacting various wildlife aspects.

DEI Initiatives at the National Zoo

The Smithsonian Diversity and Inclusion Initiatives Report outlines programs at the zoo, including diversity-focused internships and LGBTQ family programming. These efforts align with the larger Smithsonian Strategic Plan.

“Diversity and inclusion are integral to all aspects of the Smithsonian Institution’s operations,” the report states.

Programs have included rainbow-themed animal enrichment and promoting inclusive language in the zoo profession.

Promoting Representation in Zoos

The National Zoo helped launch the Association of Minority Zoo and Aquarium Professionals to increase racial and ethnic minority representation. Curator Craig Saffoe has emphasized the importance of inclusivity in the field.

The zoo’s LGBTQ family programming, held annually since 2018, features music, games, and community activities aimed at outreach and inclusion.

Challenges to DEI and Conservation Focus

The Trump administration’s efforts to eliminate DEI offices have impacted the zoo. However, DEI elements are still reflected in profiles of zoo staff and partners.

Jason Hayes from the Heritage Foundation criticizes ideologies overtaking conservation priorities in taxpayer-funded organizations like the National Zoo.

Collaborations and Efforts

The zoo is part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and International Union for Conservation of Nature, both emphasizing DEI and inclusive conservation practices. It also partners with the Zoological Society of London on conservation efforts.

Despite requests, the Smithsonian Zoo did not comment on current DEI implementations but highlighted its mission to connect people with wildlife and conservation.

Critics like Gabriella Hoffman argue that the focus on ‘woke’ policies may hinder conservation efforts by alienating visitors with politically charged messages.
