SpaceX’s Starship rocket had a dramatic halt on Thursday as its test flight was aborted just seconds before liftoff. Several engines failed to start, causing the company to halt the launch. Elon Musk’s team now investigates the issue before planning another attempt at the space-skimming journey halfway across the globe.
Starship is impressive in size and power, standing 407 feet tall, equipped with 33 engines. The launch marked its 13th test flight. The company’s webcast captured the moment three seconds before liftoff when some engines ignited but quickly shut down, keeping the rocket firmly anchored. Fuel was immediately drained from the rocket.
In a quick update, Musk mentioned via X that the next attempt might take place in a few days. Until the partial ignition, things looked promising, including favorable weather conditions.
The mission aimed to deploy 20 of SpaceX’s newest Starlink satellites. These were intended to communicate with existing satellites and photograph Starship’s heat shield during a planned hourlong flight. Both the booster and spacecraft were planned to end in the sea and were not set for recovery.
NASA has high stakes in Starship, intending to use it for lunar missions in the coming years. SpaceX and Blue Origin, owned by Jeff Bezos, are tasked with building lunar landers. The Artemis III mission crew plans to practice docking their capsule with these landers next year. The later Artemis IV mission, set for 2028, aims to transport astronauts to the moon’s south polar region.
Both companies need their landers, Starship and Blue Moon, ready for action to meet the mission timelines.
