As investment in artificial intelligence (AI) continues to rise, tech companies are widely expanding their data centers across the United States. In cities like St. Louis, these developments have sparked contentious debates. One particular proposal is causing concern among the local community.
Data Center Planned for St. Louis
David Daneshforooz, CEO of TerraWatt, intends to convert one million square feet of former warehouse space in St. Louis into a data center. He believes this initiative could revitalize the city’s outdated infrastructure.
St. Louis has a lot of old, kind of decaying infrastructure that’s being underutilized. And so data centers have the opportunity, if done responsibly, to bring back industry into those communities.
Despite potential benefits, many St. Louis residents remain skeptical. A recent Gallup poll reveals that over 70% of Americans oppose data centers in their neighborhoods.
Environmental Concerns
Kasey Fowler-Finn, a biologist at Saint Louis University, has filed a lawsuit to stop the project. Her concerns include the lack of environmental impact studies, potential noise pollution, and water and electricity usage.
There’s been no environmental impact assessment and no low-frequency sound study. A lot of claims are being made that don’t actually have data to back it up. There’s a lack of transparency about the environmental impact, about the noise impact.
Fowler-Finn stresses the need for careful consideration of data center placements due to their implications on local environments.
Security and Investment Arguments
Daneshforooz insists that hosting data centers domestically is crucial for securing American data.
Where is that information and data going to be stored? Would you rather have it be in a place like this in the middle of America, or would you rather have that information be stored in a country that we can’t regulate or control?
TerraWatt developers plan to finance their electrical usage, implement a closed water system, and contribute significantly to local education. While such strategies have succeeded elsewhere, St. Louis remains unconvinced.
