Steelers Trade Joey Porter Jr. to Cowboys Amid Critical Week

11 hours ago 0

The Pittsburgh Steelers have designated Joey Porter Jr. out for Thursday Night Football against the Cleveland Browns due to non-injury-related conditioning and a back injury. Porter was a limited participant in practice on Wednesday. Shortly after, the Steelers traded him to the Dallas Cowboys in exchange for a 2028 second-round pick and a 2027 conditional sixth-round pick.

A league source informed Newsweek that Porter is anticipated to play for the Cowboys against the Houston Texans on Sunday. It’s uncertain whether Porter will start or how extensively he will play in Week 5 as he familiarizes himself with defensive coordinator Christian Parker’s playbook. Despite this, the Cowboys intend to deploy Porter in crucial situations in what is seen as a must-win game.

The Cowboys aim to strengthen their defense with Porter, particularly with ongoing injury concerns in the secondary. The trade happened just days before a pivotal matchup against the 0-3 Texans led by quarterback C.J. Stroud. Wide receiver Nico Collins, recovering from a hamstring injury, might return against the Cowboys.

Regarding Porter’s back injury, several sources have conveyed to Newsweek that the issue is dubious and unlikely to prevent him from playing against the Texans. Previously, Porter missed most of training camp and the first three regular-season games for the Steelers amid disputes over his contract and the back injury designation.

As for the Texans, having been predicted to reach the playoffs with a bolstered defense and an offense enhanced by notable offseason changes, the team faces considerable pressure to secure a win against their in-state rivals. An 0-4 start would greatly harm Houston’s playoff prospects. Conversely, a loss for Dallas would see the team fall to a concerning 1-3 record.

The Cowboys acquired Porter to make immediate improvements to a secondary that struggled in key moments during their Week 3 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Dallas is eager to get Porter on the field as soon as possible, aiming for a stronger performance to avoid a slip in the NFC East, particularly against contenders like the Philadelphia Eagles.

Porter expressed his eagerness to participate in Sunday’s game, stating, “I’m feeling good. I’ll talk to the guys. I mean, I just got here today, so we’re just trying to take things day by day, and if everything looks good, then I should be out there.”

In the final year of his rookie contract, Porter is motivated to showcase his skills and improve his prospect for free agency in the 2027 offseason. The Cowboys, however, appear in no haste to extend his contract. For further insights into the Cowboys and NFL developments, visit Newsweek Sports.
