On the first day of early voting, voters in Atlanta are expressing dissatisfaction with President Trump. NPR’s observation of two focus groups comprised of 12 Georgians shows discontent among those who had initially supported Biden in 2020 and then Trump in 2024. Eleven of these voters indicate disappointment with Trump’s job performance; ten even regret their vote.
One participant, Charles P., 43, a Democrat, questions the positive impact of the Trump administration, citing increased inflation, heightened international tensions, and ineffective tariffs. Richard A., a 56-year-old Republican, notes long-standing unemployment and issues like the food crisis and strained immigration policies.
Trump’s approval ratings are declining, as he intensifies campaign efforts to bolster Republican presence in Washington. Monthly focus groups in battleground states, coordinated by Engagious and Nelson Recruiting, partnered with NPR for the Swing Voter Project. These groups offer insight into voter sentiments, though they lack the scientific weight of polling.
Richard Thau of Engagious reports a notable shift, with a majority of swing voters indicating Trump’s influence on their midterm decisions. Seven out of twelve participants are leaning towards voting Democrat, deviating from previous months when focus was primarily on candidates or national climate.
Karla S., 49, a Democrat, voices her commitment to voting straight Democrat, motivated by dissatisfaction with current administration policies. Cedric, 41, an independent, avoids candidates aligned with Trump, seeking alternatives to his policies.
Most focus group participants, ten out of twelve, plan to support Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff, valuing his lack of association with Trump.
Thau highlights expectations among voters that a Democratic Congress could stabilize both national governance and the economy. Thomas M., 65, an independent, foresees controls on Trump if Democrats gain majority. Concerns arise among voters about unchecked power if Republicans retain control, reflected in Jennifer W.’s apprehension about Trump having ‘free rein.’
