Tampa Bay’s Junior Caminero Injured During All-Star Game

The Midsummer Classic is meant to be a joyous event in baseball, but it took a distressing turn for the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday night. During the MLB All-Star Game, Rays’ third baseman Junior Caminero exited the field in distress after being hit by a fastball.

St. Louis Cardinals closer Riley O’Brien threw a 98 mph fastball that struck Caminero’s left hand. The incident happened during the third inning at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. Caminero immediately headed to the American League dugout, unable to continue playing, and was replaced by pinch-runner Miguel Vargas.

Fortunately, X-rays on Caminero’s hand revealed no serious damage. The Tampa Bay team breathed a sigh of relief, despite the unsettling event. Caminero currently boasts 28 home runs, ranking him fourth in the majors, and has been instrumental in the Rays’ rise to the top of the AL East.

Fox play-by-play announcer Joe Davis remarked, “Everybody’s worst nightmare in an exhibition is that anything like this happens.”

The All-Star Game event approached near disaster but ended with Caminero escaping serious injury, bringing relief to fans and his team.
