The U.S. Marshals have announced the arrest of a 16-year-old in Colorado linked to the murder of Penn State student Billy Schmidt. Philadelphia police have stated that both suspects, aged 16, will face charges as adults for the robbery and shooting that took place on June 6. Kaiseem Smith, the second suspect, is still at large, and authorities have issued a wanted poster for his apprehension.
Billy Schmidt, a Penn State student, was killed during an attempted armed robbery on June 6 at approximately 1:30 a.m. Officers discovered him with a gunshot wound to his chest. He was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly afterward.
The Philadelphia police have identified 19-year-old Khadfi Fleming as allegedly involved in the theft of a car belonging to an off-duty police officer. He is also considered a person of interest in Schmidt’s murder.
Eyewitness accounts described a red Lexus moving without headlights near 70th Street and Lindbergh Boulevard, pursued by a dark SUV. Shots were fired after two males approached the Lexus. The suspects then stole a green Dodge Charger owned by the off-duty police officer, who pursued them, leading to further gunfire.
Fleming is a person of interest in Billy Schmidt’s murder, according to police.
Surveillance footage captured Schmidt chasing his assailants, reportedly demanding the return of his phone. The video shows a phone being thrown to the ground before gunfire ensues.
Authorities released images of the two suspects involved in Schmidt’s death. Fleming’s 16-year-old brother was apprehended in Colorado earlier in June, alongside another teen who surrendered to authorities.
Billy Schmidt was a journalism student at Penn State World Campus, on track to graduate in December.
