1 hour ago 0

French World Cup star Kylian Mbappé found himself in the middle of a heated exchange after France’s narrow victory over Paraguay in Philadelphia. The match, held on July 4, 2026, was decided by Mbappé’s penalty score in the 70th minute.

Following the 1-0 win, Mbappé, full of energy, excitedly engaged the crowd at Philadelphia Stadium. In the midst of the celebration, he inadvertently stepped in front of Orlando Gill, Paraguay’s goalkeeper, who was reaching out for a handshake. Gill, feeling slighted, lost his temper and threw the ball towards Mbappé.

Gill later commented on the incident, saying, “I tried to shake his hand, but since he didn’t pay me any attention, I lost my temper.” The confrontation capped off a physically intense match between the teams.

“We knew what kind of match it was going to be,” Mbappé stated. “We can also get our hands dirty. We know how to play ugly football. Guess they were thinking we were going to show up in tuxedos, but we were ready. Even at that kind of game, we were better than them.”

During the match, Paraguay’s midfielder Andrés Cubas engaged Mbappé in physical play, and Matias Galarza also made off-the-ball contact. In the second half, Juan José Cáceras kicked Mbappé’s shin but did not receive a yellow card. Despite these fouls, only France received yellow cards, totaling three.

France’s coach, Didier Deschamps, criticized Paraguay’s rough tactics. “They pull out every trick in the book,” he noted. “Each team played the way they want. But there were insults from the other bench that I could do without.”
