People watched as firefighters arrived to extinguish a vehicle fire during a protest in East Belfast. This followed a stabbing incident in Belfast on Tuesday, June 9, 2026.
U.K. leaders urged calm after the arrest of a Sudanese man accused of attempting to kill a man in a brutal stabbing on a Belfast street. The suspect is an asylum seeker, sparking anti-immigration protests. The victim, a man in his 40s, suffered severe injuries and was hospitalized. The 30-year-old suspect remains unnamed and faces charges of attempted murder and possession of a knife. A kitchen knife was discovered at the scene.
Ryan Henderson, assistant chief constable of the Police Service of Northern Ireland, stated that police are investigating the motive. There is no indication of terrorism-related intent, and no other suspects are being sought. He acknowledged the attack caused significant concern within the community.
“This brutal attack will have sent shock waves through the community, causing real concern,” Henderson stated.
Northern Ireland’s leaders and the chief constable advised against inciting hate or fear. Reports indicated that protests were planned. Demonstrators in East Belfast set ablaze a bus, cars, and trash bins. Elsewhere, in Southampton, England, demonstrators marched during protests related to an earlier knife attack and a recent sentencing.
The Belfast attack prompted scrutiny over the suspect’s immigration status. Gavin Robinson, leader of the Democratic Unionist Party, called for stricter immigration control. Northern Ireland’s chief constable, Jon Boutcher, confirmed the suspect lived in the U.K. on a five-year visa issued in September 2023. He traveled from Sudan to Paris and Dublin before seeking asylum in Belfast. The suspect was not previously known to Northern Ireland police.
Northern Ireland Secretary Hilary Benn, when questioned in Parliament, could not verify whether the suspect entered the U.K. illegally. Keir Starmer condemned the attack, urging peace and assuring that law enforcement required adequate space for investigation.
Authorities and political figures asked the public to refrain from sharing graphic images of the attack circulating online. There were concerns about the spread of disinformation.
The recent case of a university student killed in Southampton by Vickrum Digwa has also fueled debates over immigration, race, and policing. Digwa, convicted of murder, received a life sentence with a minimum 21-year term. This case has evoked emotional protests, some of which turned violent, resulting in charges of violent disorder for several individuals.
