Terry Moran Discusses ABC News’ Lack of Viewpoint Diversity and Resulting Bias

58 minutes ago 0

Former ABC News correspondent Terry Moran admitted on Friday that the network had a liberal bias and struggled to understand President Donald Trump’s supporters due to a lack of political viewpoint diversity. During an interview on “The Fifth Column” podcast, co-host Michael C. Moynihan directly questioned Moran, “Is ABC News a liberal institution?”

“Yes,” Moran responded. “Like a lot of mainstream media, it lacks viewpoint diversity. That was a problem in covering Trump. Nobody had voted for him.”

Moran, who served as a senior national correspondent, described his efforts to challenge the prevailing perspective within the newsroom by sending internal messages advocating for fair coverage of Trump.

“I sent out ‘Hey, we should be fair to Trump’ internal emails,” Moran explained. “I heard from people — engineers, maybe the occasional producer — who said ‘Thank you.'”

An ABC News staffer shared that Moran had clashed internally with liberal colleagues, leading to his departure after a controversial social media post left the network without options.

“It’s sad honestly,” the staffer stated. “It’s unfortunate, but there was no alternative, especially in these times.”

After Moran published a since-deleted post describing Trump and White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller as “world-class haters,” ABC News decided not to renew his contract, citing a violation of network policies. An ABC spokesperson emphasized their commitment to impartial reporting.

“We are at the end of our agreement with Terry Moran and have chosen not to renew,” the spokesperson said. “ABC News holds all reporters to the highest standards of objectivity, fairness, and professionalism.”

The staffer added that the network took swift action to prevent the controversy from affecting viewers’ trust.

Moran reiterated his viewpoint shortly after leaving ABC, acknowledging that the scarcity of Trump supporters within the network hindered its ability to hear diverse perspectives across the country.

Discussing journalism’s approach to Trump, Moran noted a distinction between fairness and objectivity.

“There is no such thing as objectivity in journalism,” Moran stated. “I’d put my work at ABC News as excruciatingly fair.”

During his tenure, Moran conducted a confrontational interview with Trump in the Oval Office, marking the president’s first 100 days back in office. Trump criticized Moran’s questions about Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“I don’t trust you,” Trump retorted. “Look at you. You’re happy to do the interview, then start hitting me with these fake questions.”

Fox News Digital attempted to reach ABC for additional comments but did not receive an immediate response.
