Over the weekend, Texas faced a challenging defeat, losing 27-24 at home to an unranked Florida team. This marked their second consecutive close loss following a strong 4-0 start, including a significant win against then-No. 1 Ohio State.
The Longhorns’ recent loss to Florida was particularly disappointing. The Gators played without their starting quarterback and top wide receiver. Arch Manning’s performance was a point of concern. Manning completed 14 out of 20 passes for 173 yards and one touchdown. However, a late fumble by Manning ended any chance of a Texas comeback.
This defeat also impacted Texas’ chances of entering the College Football Playoff (CFP). According to Polymarket, their odds have decreased to 36%, a sharp drop from over 70% before facing Florida.
Texas’ Steve Sarkisian Delivers Stern Message to Arch Manning
Earlier in the season, Texas had promising victories, including triumphs over Ohio State and Tennessee, and dominant wins against Texas State and UTSA. Yet, the recent setbacks have been costly. Now at 4-2 overall and 1-2 in SEC play, Texas has dropped to No. 19 in the AP Top 25, after previously being No. 1.
These two losses, against unranked SEC opponents, have presented challenges for Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns. Their prospects for the CFP are dimming, as their remaining schedule includes facing No. 7 Ole Miss, Mississippi State, and Missouri on the road. They will also compete against LSU, Arkansas, and Texas A&M, all tough opponents.

The Longhorns will face five of their last six games against SEC teams with winning records, and three will be away games. The loss to Florida was damaging because even one more defeat could end their season aspirations. Missing the 12-team playoff could have significant repercussions for Texas.
Pressure was already on Sarkisian and Manning at the season’s start due to the team’s talent. Failing to recover from these losses and achieve a CFP spot could be a significant hurdle for the program.
