Mel Gibson’s biblical film, “The Passion of the Christ,” is set to return to theaters across the nation for a limited time this September. This re-release precedes the highly awaited sequel slated for 2027. Lionsgate and Fathom Entertainment announced that the 2004 film, which portrays the last 12 hours before Jesus’ crucifixion, will be shown from September 10 to September 17. The film has been remastered in 4K with Dolby Atmos sound.
Fans will also enjoy an exclusive preview of the sequel, “The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One,” scheduled for release on May 6, 2027. The second part, “The Resurrection of the Christ: Part Two,” is expected to premiere on May 25, 2028, during Memorial Day weekend.
“The Passion of the Christ remains one of the most extraordinary theatrical experiences ever created,” stated Kevin Grayson, Lionsgate’s president of worldwide distribution. “For millions, it was more than just a film; it became a significant cultural and faith experience. Bringing it back to theaters in a new restoration offers longtime audiences a fresh perspective and introduces it to a new generation.”
“The Passion of the Christ” was a box office success, earning over $610 million worldwide on a $30 million budget. It received Academy Award nominations for makeup, score, and cinematography. However, it was also controversial due to its graphic violence and themes. For two decades, it held the record for the highest-grossing domestic R-rated film, until “Deadpool & Wolverine” surpassed it in 2024.
Lionsgate released a full-length trailer in celebration of the film’s return to cinemas. Tickets will be available starting July 24, both online and at participating theaters. Theater information can be found on Fathom Entertainment’s website.
Ray Nutt, CEO of Fathom Entertainment, commented on the film’s lasting impact. “Few modern-day films have made such a significant impact on the cultural landscape as ‘The Passion of the Christ.’ Twenty years ago, audiences across different belief systems embraced the film, marking it as a notable success and opening opportunities for future religious-themed films.”
Jim Caviezel, originally praised for his role as Jesus, was recast for the sequels due to de-aging technology issues and scheduling hurdles. Finnish actor Jaakko Ohtonen will play Jesus in the new films, and Mariela Garriga will assume the role of Mary Magdalene, previously portrayed by Monica Bellucci.
Gibson noted that the sequels would delve into “spiritual realms” and the struggles for “the soul of mankind.” In May, he expressed the significance of the upcoming films, stating, “This film represents a major part of my life’s work. It’s more than a film; it’s a mission I’ve pursued for over 20 years to tell what I believe is the most important story in human history.”
