The Perception of Political Figures as Action Figures

1 month ago 0

In my childhood, my siblings and I enjoyed playing with G.I. Joe action figures. They would engage in battles, drive military vehicles, and sometimes take Barbie’s pink Corvette for a spin despite being too small to reach the pedals. These figures were inanimate, without opinions, and ready to be maneuvered however we desired, fitting effortlessly into our imagined narratives.

Many individuals now seem to view politicians and former leaders like Michelle and Barack Obama similarly, as entities to control and mold. For liberals, this tendency arises due to a lack of interesting, progressive candidates who differ significantly from the typical Democratic candidates. Traditionally, these candidates are often white, heterosexual males from affluent backgrounds.

For over a decade, there’s been a public call for Michelle Obama to run for president, despite her clear disinterest. In a conversation with actor Tracee Ellis Ross last year, she stated unequivocally, “Don’t even look at me about running ’cause you all are lying. You’re not ready for a woman.” Despite such clear statements, speculation about her potential candidacy continues, neglecting her personal choice.

It’s important to note that Michelle Obama has never held an elected office. While this isn’t disqualifying, considering the current U.S. president, standards should exist in leadership roles. The collision of inexperience and power has been witnessed before. Mrs. Obama achieved much during her tenure as the first lady, and while she may have qualities that would make her a fine president and potentially a significant improvement over the current officeholder, having leadership experience coupled with a genuine desire for the role should be prioritized.

Barack Obama also encounters similar pressures. Many call for him to intervene in the current political climate or to pursue a third term, a notion that echoes the sentiments of Trump supporters who similarly express desires for another term for Mr. Trump.
