In recent days, some of college football’s most promising quarterbacks have begun their seasons, including Arch Manning from Texas, Dante Moore from Oregon, and CJ Carr from Notre Dame. These players have the potential to achieve standout seasons and become high picks in the NFL. However, Colin Cowherd has expressed a different opinion on his weekly show, ‘The Colin Cowherd Podcast.’
‘I can’t believe there’s a better quarterback than Darian Mensah,’ Cowherd stated about the Miami Hurricanes QB. ‘You can tell me about CJ Carr, Arch Manning, LaNorris Sellers, Dante Moore. Mensah’s as good a college quarterback as you’ll find.’
Cowherd appreciates Mensah’s remarkable journey, noting that he played high school football in a less-celebrated region. Mensah faced similar circumstances while at Tulane and Duke.
Mensah is now with Miami, facing increased pressure and playing alongside superior talent. Cowherd admires his journey and believes Mensah excels on the field.
This admiration was justified on Friday night when Mensah excelled against Stanford. He completed an impressive 27 of 30 passes for 401 yards and five touchdowns in Miami’s 45-6 victory. Wide receiver Malachi Toney was his top target, amassing 234 yards and three touchdowns.
Mensah became the Hurricanes’ starting quarterback following Carson Beck’s departure to the NFL. His debut performance against Stanford, highlighted by a near-perfect completion rate and no interceptions, has been widely shared on social media. Mensah’s ability to maintain composure against pressure was evident, showcasing his talent on the field.
However, some fans question the strength of Miami’s season-opening opponent, suggesting that Mensah’s true abilities have yet to be tested. Upcoming, tougher opponents could reveal more about his capabilities, supporting either Cowherd’s praise or highlighting potential weaknesses.
Despite these doubts, Mensah currently leads in Heisman Trophy odds, although the season is still in its early stages. Other quarterbacks mentioned by Cowherd have stronger opposition ahead, which may allow them to stand out further.
Miami’s head coach, Mario Cristobal, expects Mensah to continue his impressive performance as the team aims for the College Football Playoff and National Championship.
The Hurricanes are set to face Florida A&M on Thursday, Sept. 10, and will later compete against the fourth-ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Saturday, Nov. 7.
