A tragic incident unfolded at Laguna Beach, California, when a 5-year-old was swept into the ocean amid strong water conditions. The child was in the water with their family near the Montage Resort when the event occurred on June 10, 2026.
Officials reported that lifeguard rescue boats were dispatched to the area in response to the emergency. The body of the young girl was discovered 250 to 300 yards offshore from Christmas Cove, identified during an early aerial survey on Thursday morning. This location is roughly a quarter mile north of Treasure Island Beach, the area where the incident happened.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Department confirmed the identity of the child after the recovery by Laguna Beach Marine Safety personnel and the Harbor Patrol.
The powerful surf conditions contributed to the grandmother and sibling being caught in the ocean’s pull. While bystanders managed to rescue the mother and one child, the search for the 5-year-old continued, ultimately being suspended on Thursday by the U.S. Coast Guard. They had searched tirelessly for over 30 hours, spanning over 90 square miles.
High surf conditions had been reported on Tuesday, with warnings from the National Weather Service regarding potential hazards due to swells of up to 9 feet. Such conditions prompted widespread beach hazard alerts throughout Southern California, warning of dangerous waves and rip currents.
