Northwestern University’s Ryan Field represents a new era for college football stadiums. The stadium project is led by developer Pat Ryan Jr., whose vision emphasizes an ‘experiential’ approach and ensures a ‘premium for everybody’ experience.
Patrick Ryan Sr., a benefactor of the stadium, provided a significant portion of the funding for its construction. The university contributed around $300 million out of the $875 million total, with the Ryan family covering most of the remaining costs. Importantly, no public funds were requested. The only major condition attached was hosting six annual concerts, aiming to create a sought-after music venue.
This concert arrangement faced neighborhood opposition, but eventually, concessions such as additional landscaping were made. The stadium’s strategic location benefits from Evanston’s lower amusement tax than Chicago, potentially making it a competitor to venues like Soldier Field and Wrigley Field.
The new Ryan Field diverges from traditional models like Ohio Stadium or the Rose Bowl. Seating just 35,000 fans, it focuses on experiences and interactions rather than setting records for size. Pat Ryan Jr. advocates for a design inspired by NFL stadiums, emphasizing social aspects and improving fan engagement rather than merely focusing on the game score.
This modern-day stadium includes a 520,000 square-foot campus with comfortable seating, amenities for premium ticket holders, and large open concourses. Unlike other venues, Ryan Field offers unobstructed views from all areas, allowing fans to enjoy the game even while socializing or seeking refreshments.
Ryan Field is a reflection of how college football is embedded with financial investment, impacting ticket pricing and seating preferences. The stadium’s design focuses on quality seating with features like cup holders and ample leg space, crucial for attracting concert artists who value premium seating options.
The design includes European soccer stadium influences, such as ‘safe standing’ sections and seats placed under cover. Advanced technology features prominently, with high-resolution screens setting new standards in the Big Ten.
Furthermore, community events like holiday markets are planned following its opening, broadening its function beyond sporting events.
Ryan Field promises to be a transformative venue in Evanston, set to change the dynamic of college football and entertainment experiences.
