Transgender Athlete AB Hernandez Wraps Up High School Career Amid Controversy

1 month ago 0

Transgender athlete AB Hernandez concluded a highly-publicized high school sports career on Saturday night at the California track and field state championship. Hernandez claimed victory in two events and shared podium spots with female athletes. The athlete took first place in the girls’ high jump and triple jump and secured third in the long jump. Last year, Hernandez won state championships in the triple jump and high jump and finished second in the long jump.

Podium Recognition and Controversy

During the CIF state championship, Hernandez shared the podium with the female competitor finishing one spot behind. The California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) reinstated its pilot program from last year, which gave podium acknowledgment to the girls placed directly behind Hernandez. At one of the podium ceremonies, multiple girls shared spots, leading to one side of the podium remaining empty.

This policy faced significant scrutiny from women’s sports activists and supporters of Hernandez. Debate over images of Hernandez sharing the podium initiated discussions about transgender athletes in women’s sports, a topic that has been prominent since Hernandez’s high school career began in the 2024-2025 school year.

Political Implications

The issue of transgender athletes in sports reached a peak during championship weekend. Hernandez appeared in a video with Tom Steyer, a Democrat gubernatorial candidate. On the same day, Steve Hilton, a Republican candidate, led a rally advocating for the protection of girls’ sports.

On Saturday, LGBTQ advocacy groups organized a press conference outside the CIF championship. Supporters of Hernandez and activists from “Save Girls Sports” clashed verbally, leading to police oversight, although no police intervention was required.

Hernandez’s Achievements

Hernandez won two state titles that night, succeeding in the high jump and triple jump, despite not winning the long jump. The athlete participated in both events simultaneously, a rare accomplishment.

Ongoing Debate

With Hernandez completing high school, the debate over transgender athletes in girls’ sports continues in California. The U.S. Department of Justice is suing education agencies in the state for allowing transgender athletes to compete in female events. Additionally, Hernandez’s school district, Jurupa Unified, is under investigation by the Department of Education.

As the gubernatorial primary approaches, the topic remains a focal point in political campaigns, with candidates addressing the contentious issue.
