Chicago Cubs relief pitcher Trent Thornton expressed dissatisfaction with his performance in the team’s 9-5 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers at Wrigley Field.
In the top of the fifth inning, Thornton was taken out of the game in frustration. He had entered the game during the fourth inning with a runner on third and two outs, with the Cubs trailing 6-5. Thornton managed to strike out Luis Lara, stopping the scoring threat.
However, in the fifth inning, Thornton’s performance faltered. While he struck out Christian Yelich initially, he then allowed three consecutive baserunners. Joey Ortiz walked, and both Cooper Pratt and Jackson Chourio hit singles, prompting manager Craig Counsell to remove Thornton from the game.
“Thornton was visibly angry as he entered the dugout, spiking his glove and expressing his frustration vocally.”
Despite his difficulties, the Cubs did not suffer further damage from Thornton’s outing. Ryan Rolison replaced him and secured the next two outs, preserving the 6-5 scoreline.
Thornton is experiencing his inaugural season with the Cubs and has been an effective reliever. Over 44 games, he has maintained a 3.40 ERA across 45 innings and achieved three saves.
The Cubs failed to score for the remainder of the contest, leading to their loss in the third game of a crucial four-game series against their National League Central opponents. They are hopeful for a series split against the Brewers, striving to recover from dropping two out of the first three games.
