Tropical Storm Warning Issued for Louisiana and Texas Coasts

1 month ago 0

On Monday, officials issued a tropical storm warning affecting coastal areas in Louisiana and Texas. The National Hurricane Center identified a developing system in the Gulf as Potential Tropical Cyclone Five, marking the fifth such system in the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season. If it progresses as expected, it will be named Tropical Storm Edouard.

Weather experts anticipate the storm will bring significant rainfall to regions in coastal Texas. Forecasts indicate 3 to 6 inches of rain could affect some inland areas of east-central Texas, with potential totals reaching up to 9 inches in select locations. Southwestern Louisiana expects 2 to 3 inches of rainfall. This precipitation raises concerns over flash flooding, especially in low-lying and urban areas.

In addition to rainfall, the possibility of storm surge up to 3 feet in coastal areas is worrying. The warning covers areas from Texas’ Port Bolivar to Louisiana’s Vermilion/Cameron Parish Line. Tropical storm warnings suggest imminent weather conditions, like strong winds, rain, and flooding, possibly occurring within the next 24 to 36 hours.

On Monday morning, the storm moved slowly westward toward the Gulf Coast, being located approximately 130 miles from Morgan City, Louisiana, and 230 miles from Port Arthur, Texas. At 11 a.m. ET, the storm had maximum sustained winds of 35 mph. Though not yet strong enough to be classified as a tropical storm, forecasters expect an increase in strength within the next day.
