In recent hours, tension has been reported between ‘Monday Night Football’ broadcasters Joe Buck and Troy Aikman. Buck’s new five-year contract, valued over $100 million, contrasts with Aikman’s unsigned status, sparking speculation about his future with ESPN.
During a radio appearance on 96.7 The Ticket, Aikman addressed rumors about his friendship with Buck and his broadcasting future. He confirmed his departure from ESPN at the end of the NFL season, which concludes with Super Bowl LXI.
‘There’s probably a time and a place for all that to be discussed,’ Aikman said. ‘I’ll broadcast through this season, and I’ll be a free agent at the end of the year and kind of see what happens. I’m looking forward to whatever the rest of this season does hold and the Super Bowl and all that, and where my next landing spot may be.’
Aikman has been with ESPN since 2022, joining alongside Buck from Fox, where they led as the No. 1 broadcast team. His potential move into free agency opens various paths. CBS, which recently parted ways with Tony Romo, could consider Aikman’s experience appealing despite J.J. Watt’s current role with Jim Nantz.
Aikman could return to Fox, where Tom Brady and Kevin Burkhardt helm the top team. Greg Olen’s rumored departure at season’s end may present an opportunity with Joe Davis on Fox’s No. 2 team.
