The Denver Broncos secured a 17-14 overtime victory over the Seattle Seahawks on Thursday night. Broncos kicker Wil Lutz nailed a 53-yard field goal to claim the win. The Seahawks had possession first in sudden death but faced a third-and-7 from their own 28-yard line. Quarterback Sam Darnold attempted to force a pass into double coverage, overlooking Denver cornerback Ja’Quan McMillian. McMillian intercepted the throw, giving Denver a prime spot at Seattle’s 43-yard line.
Denver’s head coach, Sean Payton, opted for three consecutive running plays to manage the clock and position the ball for Lutz’s decisive field goal.
In a display of vintage team colors, the game featured the Broncos’ throwback Orange Crush uniforms against the Seahawks’ throwback Royal Blue jerseys. It was a rare NFL color vs. color matchup.
Payton’s strategy in the first half seemed flawless. Denver controlled the ball for a majority of the time, establishing a 14-3 halftime lead. J.K. Dobbins and RJ Harvey completed two determined touchdown drives with short runs.
The second half, however, painted a different picture. Denver’s offense lagged, gaining only 107 passing yards without any significant downfield opportunities. The Seahawks mounted a strong comeback, closing the gap to 14-11 with a George Holani touchdown and a two-point conversion pass from Darnold to Rashid Shaheed. Jason Myers’ 34-yard field goal for Seattle, with mere seconds remaining, forced the game into overtime.
Denver’s offensive performance was lacking, managing only 36 yards across eight second-half possessions. The team’s punter, Jeremy Crawshaw, saw considerable action. Vance Joseph’s defense was pivotal, ensuring the Broncos remained competitive. Despite missing Patrick Surtain II, Denver’s defensive front sacked Darnold five times and generated crucial turnovers. Notably, Nik Bonitto stripped Rashid Shaheed of the ball in scoring range, Kris Abrams-Draine snagged a fourth-quarter interception, and McMillian’s overtime interception sealed the victory.
Though Seattle reached 353 total yards, with Jaxon Smith-Njigba notching 12 catches for 134 yards, turnovers nullified their efforts. The Broncos’ defense, though seemingly outmatched at times, played an essential role in the victory.
Looking forward, Denver’s quarterback Bo Nix will need to address issues in their offensive strategy as they prepare to host the Arizona Cardinals after a 10-day pause. Currently, the Broncos stand at 4-2, trailing behind the undefeated Kansas City Chiefs in their division.
