In December, President Donald Trump filed a personal lawsuit against the BBC for defamation and a violation of Florida’s Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act. He is seeking $10 billion, divided equally between the two claims, after the BBC’s ‘Panorama’ documentary allegedly misrepresented his January 6, 2021, remarks.
A magistrate judge has warned Trump of potential sanctions if he doesn’t sit for a deposition. The BBC claims his legal team says there’s no availability before the discovery period ends on December 18, citing his involvement in national matters.
The documentary in question edited Trump’s speech, omitting his call for peaceful protest, which critics argue was misleading. Trump’s legal team argues the BBC acted maliciously, aiming to influence the 2024 Presidential Election.
Although the BBC apologized and withdrew the program, it maintains the error doesn’t justify a defamation lawsuit. The issue has prompted resignations within the corporation.
