President Donald Trump’s recent promise of a $5,000 payout to Americans if Republicans succeed in the midterm elections has ignited criticism. Democratic lawmakers label the proposal as a ‘hysterical’ lie and an unlawful bribe. Rep. Chrissy Houlahan, D-Pa., remarked that the idea is ‘insane’ and akin to an unaffordable bribe to the American populace.
Rep. Pete Aguilar, D-Calif., commented on the proposal, stating it is like ‘fantasy land.’ He expressed skepticism about its feasibility, joking about ‘puppies and rainbows’ accompanying the promise. Despite the bold proposal, some Democrats dismiss it outright. For instance, Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., chose not to comment on the matter when approached by Fox News Digital.
Trump committed to the $5,000 payment during a speech at the Republican National Committee’s midterm convention in Dallas. He linked the promise to the GOP retaining control of both Congressional houses. Sen. Angela Alsobrooks, D-Md., questioned its necessity, emphasizing existing Republican control and describing the administration as a ‘disaster.’
Many Democrats see the promise as mere campaign rhetoric. Rep. Christian Menefee, D-Texas, criticized Trump for previously making unfulfilled promises. He expressed doubt about the checks’ realization, labeling it ‘sad and shameful’ election season behavior. Sen. Raphael Warnock, D-Ga., shared similar thoughts, stating it is another untrustworthy promise.
Opposition to Trump’s proposal extends beyond Democrats, with some Republican figures also questioning its practicality. House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., indicated that Congress approval would be necessary for any such payout to occur. Rep. Suhas Subramanyam, D-Va., pointed out Trump’s history of not following through.
The proposal would financially impact the federal government, costing an estimated $1.2 trillion. Despite critiques of affordability, Trump counters that the U.S. can handle the cost. Vice President JD Vance hinted at potential funding from tariff revenues and suggested limiting the payout to exclude wealthy recipients for better feasibility.
Democrats urge Trump to prioritize tangible deliverables for the public, particularly in healthcare. Subramanyam highlighted the significance of healthcare and food assistance over a one-time check. Sen. Warnock attributed the perceived need for the checks to Trump’s policy failures and urged policy revisions instead of post-election handouts.
