U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner visited Kyiv for discussions aiming to end the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, now spanning over 4½ years due to Russia’s invasion. Their trip follows a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow as both nations intensify air attacks.
The U.S. has been attempting to renew efforts to cease hostilities, despite recent focus on Iran. Fast-flying drones and air-raid sirens have become daily occurrences in Kyiv amid struggles along the extensive front line.
After talks with the U.S. officials, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized the goal of achieving a ‘just, fair peace’ to prevent future aggression against Ukraine. He expressed gratitude to the American negotiators for their visit and announced upcoming talks with security advisers from Britain, France, and Germany.
Talks in Moscow
Saturday’s Moscow meeting between Putin and the U.S. envoys lasted over three hours but yielded no significant breakthroughs. Putin’s adviser, Yuri Ushakov, described the discussions as constructive and useful, although he did not disclose any specific outcomes or focus solely on the Ukraine combat situation.
Economic issues and potential collaborative projects between Russia and the U.S. were also discussed as part of the broader dialogue.
Continued Conflict
A temporary agreement to pause strikes during negotiation time did not prevent overnight exchanges of fire. Russian attacks resulted in casualties and property damage in various Ukrainian regions, while Ukraine intercepted a portion of the drones and missiles launched by Russia.
Meanwhile, fatal and injurious incidents occurred in Russia due to Ukrainian drone strikes, as confirmed by local authorities and the Russian Defense Ministry’s reports.
Mixed Reactions
Kyiv residents participated in a moment of silence for fallen soldiers, displaying mixed sentiments towards the outcome of peace talks. Some attendees, like Nataliia Lipei, hoped for productive negotiations, while others, such as Oleksandr Pastukhov, expressed skepticism about the potential for change.
International Appeal for Peace
Pope Leo XIV renewed calls for peace and hoped for diplomatic progress through recent negotiations. His appeal took place during prayer offerings in Vatican City’s St. Peter’s Square.
