The United States military conducted a lethal strike on a vessel in the Caribbean on Sunday, claiming the boat was involved in drug trafficking activities. According to the U.S. Southern Command, the vessel was traveling along known trafficking routes. A video released by the military showed an explosion destroying a moving boat, identified as a go-fast vessel.
In a statement, the Southern Command explained that the strike was executed under their direction by the Joint Task Force Western Hemisphere. The military alleged that intelligence indicated the vessel’s involvement in narcotics trafficking but did not provide evidence to support this claim.
The operation resulted in the deaths of four individuals labeled as narco-terrorists. The Trump administration has previously stated that such strikes aim to eliminate suspected narco-terrorists, with over 235 deaths reported since September 2025 from similar actions.
Despite these actions, the Pentagon has withheld identities of those killed and has not presented proof of drugs on board the targeted vessels. This ongoing military strategy has attracted criticism from politicians, including some Republicans like Senator Rand Paul, who argue that there is a risk of killing without due process or targeting innocent people. Human rights groups have also condemned these actions as “extrajudicial killings.”
The U.S. Southern Command also revealed plans to expand these military operations through agreements with allied countries in Latin America. However, while Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth announced collaboration with Colombia, Guatemala, and Honduras during a visit to Panama in August, Guatemala has rejected claims of such an agreement. In March, Ecuador began joint operations with the U.S. aimed at combating criminal groups on land.
