Uber Introduces Live Video Streaming for Teen Accounts

1 month ago 0

Teens often have places to go, like school, soccer practice, work, or a friend’s house. Parents might not always be available to drive them. Uber is offering a new way for families to stay connected with their teens during rides.

The company has added live video streaming to Uber Teen Accounts. This feature lets a linked parent or guardian view their teen inside the car through the driver’s front-facing smartphone camera during an active ride. It is currently available in nine U.S. markets, with plans to roll out nationwide.

While the idea of live video may sound reassuring to parents, it raises questions about privacy. Concerns include who can access the video stream, whether Uber can access it, and what happens to the video after the ride.

How Uber Teen Accounts Live Video Works

Introduced in 2023, Uber Teen Accounts aim to provide teenagers more independence while keeping them connected to a parent or guardian. The live video feature adds an extra layer of visibility for families.

If a driver has enabled live video, Uber sends a notification to the connected parent or guardian when the ride starts. The parent can tap the notification to watch the live feed via the driver’s smartphone camera. Both the teen and driver receive a notification when the parent starts viewing the stream. Only the parent or guardian linked to the teen’s account can view the feed, and Uber cannot access the stream in real time.

Availability of Uber Teen Live Video

The live video feature is currently available in the following U.S. markets:

  • Atlanta
  • Phoenix
  • Orlando
  • Raleigh-Durham
  • Portland, Oregon
  • San Antonio
  • Cleveland
  • Rhode Island
  • El Paso

Uber plans to expand this feature nationwide over the next weeks, but it depends on whether the driver has enabled live video.

What Happens to the Video After the Ride?

Privacy is a key concern for families using this feature. Uber states that the live video is encrypted, and neither the driver nor the teen can access it after the ride. The parent or guardian loses access once the ride ends.

The encrypted video stays on Uber’s servers for up to 14 days unless shared as part of a safety report. Uber may access the decryption key for safety investigations. If the video becomes part of a safety-related report, it is retained according to Uber’s data policies. This setup assures families of visibility during the ride while ensuring limited access afterward.

Why Uber Added Live Video to Teen Accounts

Uber says Teen Accounts were developed based on feedback from parents and drivers. Since launching, the service has expanded to over 50 countries, with tens of millions of teens using it annually.

Live video adds to existing safety tools for teen rides. Parents can track trips, verify PINs, and use audio recording features. The real-time video offers a glimpse that a map cannot provide, offering reassurance in unexpected situations during a ride.

Tips for Parents Using Uber Teen Accounts

  • Check ride details before your teen gets in. Ensure the driver’s name, vehicle, and license plate match the app.
  • Discuss when you’ll use live video. Setting expectations upfront helps your teen understand your intentions.
  • Keep safety features turned on. Use live trip tracking and PIN verification alongside live video when available.
  • Have a backup plan. Ensure your teen knows how to contact you or call for help if they feel unsafe.

Remind your teen to trust their instincts. If anything seems different from the app details, they should avoid entering the vehicle and contact you.

What This Means for You

If your teen uses Uber, live video offers a way to monitor rides without constant check-ins. Consider your approach, whether watching the whole ride or just checking briefly.

The feature relies on the driver enabling it, so pay attention to trip details in the app. Technology provides visibility, but your teen should know how to act if a ride feels wrong.
