Ukraine’s Call for Elections Amid War

47 minutes ago 0

As of August 19, 2026, Ukraine’s former defense minister, Mykhailo Fedorov, has proposed holding elections despite the ongoing conflict with Russia. This marks the most significant challenge to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s administration since the war began. Zelenskyy had imposed martial law in February 2022, which currently prevents elections.

In a YouTube video, Fedorov declared, Democracy cannot be held hostage by Russia, advocating for a process to restore full democratic elections, even during wartime. He expressed that Ukraine’s fight aims to preserve its status as a free European nation.

Before his dismissal in July, Fedorov was instrumental in developing strategies that leveraged drones and robotics to counter Russia. Zelenskyy removed him due to an irreconcilable conflict with Oleksandr Syrskyi, a top general. This decision led to widespread protests across Ukraine, demonstrating Fedorov’s popularity and the public’s dissatisfaction with his removal.

Fedorov’s strategies have significantly shifted the war’s dynamics, with Ukraine increasing its deep-strike capabilities against Russia and bolstering its military resources. In a CBS News interview shortly before suggesting elections, Fedorov emphasized that public protests reflect Ukraine’s commitment to democracy and freedom.

Though Fedorov did not outline his exact plans in the event of an election, he has maintained that returning as defense minister would be his only government role. He acknowledged the logistics of voting during war, notably the challenges for frontline soldiers, displaced persons, and others affected by the conflict.

Despite these challenges, he stated, This is complex. … But complexity does not mean impossibility.
