Ukraine’s Drone Attack on Moscow Amid Russian Elections

7 days ago 0

In a strategic move against Russia, Ukrainian forces launched over 1,000 drones including hundreds aimed at Moscow, according to officials. This occurred as the Kremlin finalized its parliamentary elections. The mayor of Moscow labeled the drone attack as the “largest ever” to hit the capital, noting damage to an oil refinery and a residential building.

The assault resulted in two fatalities and 20 injuries in the Moscow region, stated local Gov. Andrei Vorobyov. The deceased were identified as a 74-year-old man and a 44-year-old woman. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the use of various missiles and drones, including Ukraine’s Flamingo and Pelican missiles, targeting oil and logistics facilities to financially strain Russia’s war efforts.

Russia held its first wartime parliamentary elections, largely devoid of opposition to President Vladimir Putin, and expected to reinforce Kremlin power. The voting extended to Crimea and four Ukrainian regions annexed illegally by Moscow. Kyiv condemned these elections as unlawful.

Russia’s Ministry of Defense reported the downing of 1,100 Ukrainian drones across the nation, Crimea, and the Black Sea. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin mentioned that 450 drones were intercepted heading for the capital, with damage recorded at the Moscow Oil Refinery and a residential area. He asserted this attack aimed to disrupt the elections but deemed it unsuccessful.

Since Russia’s invasion over four years ago, Ukraine has advanced its military drone technology, showcasing impressive long-range capabilities globally. By targeting Russia, Kyiv plans to evoke public awareness of the war’s impact, urging President Putin to consider peace talks. Despite this, Putin remains resolute in maintaining the invasion.

The ongoing conflict sees both nations engaged in increased aerial strikes, while fighting along the 1,250-kilometer front line in eastern and southern Ukraine remains restricted due to drone and ground robot threats.
