The University of Maryland has indefinitely suspended its club tennis team following the revelation that members distributed racist imagery tied to the Ku Klux Klan.
Emails with this imagery were sent to other universities in connection to the team’s upcoming fall invitational tournament. The university became aware of the situation and quickly took action by suspending the team. This decision was made on Saturday after officials identified the offensive content.
The university has referred the matter to its police department for further investigation. Additionally, the Office of Student Conduct at the University of Maryland is leading an inquiry into the incident. Officials noted that the email might have involved only a small number of student team members directly.
