Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels experienced a recurring setback on Sunday, dislocating his left elbow during the team’s defeat against the Dallas Cowboys, as confirmed by head coach Dan Quinn. This marks the second occurrence of this injury in as many seasons for the third-year player. Previously, the injury kept him out for four weeks towards the end of the regular season.
Daniels is scheduled for additional medical evaluations on Monday, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. In his absence, the Commanders plan to rely on Marcus Mariota for their Week 3 clash with the Seattle Seahawks.
“Once I know an update that we can move forward with, then I’ll give you that,” Quinn stated. “Man, are we bummed for him. He was really playing his (expletive) off. We will rally so hard around Marcus (Mariota) until Jayden’s back. That’s what we talked about as a team.”
The injury took place on the final play of the first half. Replays highlighted the severity of the incident, prompting analyst Tom Brady to utter an expletive in response.
Quinn addressed the decision-making during that crucial third-and-goal play with three seconds left in the second quarter, maintaining confidence in the call. “I thought looking back on it, at the 1-yard line, we need touchdowns,” Quinn said. He expressed no regrets about the aggressive approach against the Cowboys’ offense. “I don’t regret that call. Obviously any time someone’s injured, you play the ‘what if’ game. I don’t think this is one of those times for me. I hate that it happened. … I wasn’t hesitant about going into that spot. We’re going to be aggressive in this game against their offense. So I don’t regret that. Obviously, the outcome sucks. But it wasn’t a ‘what if’ or ‘I wish I had done something differently.’”
Throughout his sophomore season, Daniels was limited to seven starts due to multiple injuries. These included a knee sprain, a hamstring issue, and the prior elbow dislocation.
