Wisconsin GOP Candidate Survives Plane Crash Landing in Lake

3 weeks ago 0

A plane carrying Republican gubernatorial candidate Tom Tiffany crashed into a Wisconsin lake after losing power. Rescuers quickly initiated a search in the dark, tracking the plane’s last known GPS location as they sought out Tiffany and pilot Leonard “Len” Boltz.

Emergency dispatch audio revealed teams calling for ambulances and boats. Tiffany later explained that moments before the crash, Boltz alerted him of the impending descent. The aircraft hit the water shortly afterward, causing Tiffany to suffer a cut requiring 12 stitches, while Boltz needed four stitches for his injury.

The two exited the plane through the passenger-side door as it filled with water. While Tiffany lost his phone, Boltz managed to call 911 before they climbed onto the sinking plane. They waited about 10 minutes on the aircraft as it submerged before swimming toward the shore.

“We are just really fortunate,” Tiffany said, expressing gratitude as he became emotional about their survival.

The search involved thermal imaging and tracking the phone’s GPS to locate the men. Responders announced finding and pulling them from the water. Crews confirmed both men were alert and safe.

Tiffany praised Boltz’s quick thinking during the emergency landing. The pilot retracted the plane’s landing gear, minimizing potential disaster. The impact was described as similar to a fast-moving car crash, but the experience of the former Air Force pilot proved crucial.

Wausau Mayor Doug Diny commended Boltz’s skill in managing a night water landing. Tiffany and Boltz received treatment and were later released from the hospital.

Despite the ordeal, Tiffany intends to continue his gubernatorial campaign, contesting against Democratic opponent David Crowley in the upcoming election. The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the cause of the plane’s power loss.
