In the United States, amid protests and heated debates, the World Cup has emerged as a positive experience both nationally and globally. Local supporters of Algeria’s soccer team, stationed at the University of Kansas for the 2026 World Cup, joined in street celebrations before their match against Argentina. This event took place in Lawrence, Kansas.
On Sundays, demonstrators gather near the ACME Hot and Fresh T-shirt shop in Lawrence. Their protests cover various topics, including the wars in Iran and Gaza, the White House, and ICE. These protests get reactions from passersby; some show approval with honks, others dissent.
However, the current focus in Lawrence is cheering for a single team, which benefits the local Hot and Fresh store. According to David Sauter, a co-owner, there is high demand for Algerian shirts.
The small city, which hosts the University of Kansas, has experienced an influx of Algerian fans recently. This is due to the Algerian national soccer team choosing Lawrence as their base for the World Cup. The university’s marching band even played the Algerian national anthem during their stay. Police on motorcycles provided the team with official escorts.
Mr. Sauter remarked, “The effort to restore democracy continues.” Yet, he added, “Viva L’Algerie!” noting the positive distraction the event provides.
