Fans of Scotland are famously known for their enthusiastic consumption of beer, having once left Boston’s pubs dry.
England’s run in the World Cup has not only stirred excitement for fans hoping for a chance at a first final in six decades, but also economically supported pubs across England.
Steve Haslam, owner of Bread and Cheese pub in Thundersley, said beer sales during the World Cup account for 15% of his annual revenue. He anticipates earning £7,000 to £9,000 more than usual with England’s upcoming match against Argentina.
Fans across London celebrate having reached the semi-finals. The surge has provided a lifeline to struggling pubs, with 5.5 million extra pints sold during the group stages according to UK Hospitality.
Emma McClarkin, CEO of the British Beer and Pub Association, predicts Wednesday could see a sale of 6 million additional pints, boosting average midweek sales by 75%. Despite this, pub closures continue due to economic pressures.
Between January and March, 161 pubs have closed, facing squeezed margins from high business rates and taxes.
CAMRA chairman Ash Corbett-Collins emphasizes the need for government recognition of pubs’ economic and communal contributions.
He argues for fairer business rates and reduced food and drink taxes for sustainable growth in the industry.
Both UK Hospitality and the BBPA call for additional legislative intervention to protect pubs from financial strains amid the temporary boost from sports events.
A spokesperson from Britain’s Treasury mentions government initiatives, including tax cuts for family attractions and extended World Cup hours, as measures to support the hospitality sector.
However, Steve Haslam mentions that government tax cuts and business rate reforms remain insufficient in individual pub health.
He stresses that the great British pub serves as a social hub and a vital part of community life.
He highlights pubs’ significance in creating memories and enriching communities.
BBPA underscores the need for a long-term strategy to maintain pubs and safeguard jobs for the future.
