Taylor Swift has released a new song for Disney and Pixar’s upcoming film, “Toy Story 5.” On Friday, she debuted “I Knew It, I Knew You,” marking a return to elements of country music. Swift gained initial fame in Nashville’s music scene, becoming known worldwide afterward.
Taylor Swift Returns to Country Roots
In “I Knew It, I Knew You,” Swift doesn’t use a traditional twang, but incorporates classic country elements. The song features live instruments, with a plucky banjo and harmonica at the start. Her last official country project was 2012’s “Red,” though it was more of a crossover album. The prior album “Speak Now” in 2010 was her last full-length country album.
This track follows her previous original material, “The Life of a Showgirl,” released in October. The song is co-produced by Jack Antonoff, her frequent collaborator. Their partnership began with Swift’s 2014 album, “1989,” and includes future projects like “The Tortured Poets Department” in 2024.
Swift stated on social media that creating this song felt both new and familiar. She found inspiration in Jessie, the iconic cowgirl character. “Being a ‘Toy Story’ kid from age 5 until now feels like an adventure lasting forever,” she shared.
The Rollout of ‘I Knew It, I Knew You’
Last weekend, billboards with the initials “TS,” styled like the “Toy Story” logo, appeared in cities such as Los Angeles, Chicago, and London. This design cleverly nods to both the franchise and Swift. On Monday, Swift confirmed the song’s release through Instagram. She expressed her affection for the characters since her childhood and was inspired after viewing “Toy Story 5” in its early stages.
Fans eagerly preordered three CD single versions of the track from her website, which quickly sold out. These include the film version, an acoustic rendition, and a piano version.
“It’s incredible how meaningful it’s been having Taylor write and perform this song,” stated Andrew Stanton, “Toy Story 5” director and writer. “The song is deeply connected to ‘Toy Story,’ feeling as if it’s always been part of the series.”
Oscar Considerations for the Song
Fans have speculated about the song’s potential for Oscar recognition in the original song category. To be eligible for the 2027 Academy Awards, a feature film and its song must be theatrically released between January 1 and December 31. “Toy Story 5” will premiere on June 19, meeting that requirement.
A new rule states if the song plays over end credits, it must overlap with the film’s final 15 seconds to qualify. If submitted, and should Swift win, she would be closer to an EGOT. She currently holds 14 Grammys and an Emmy. This would leave only a Tony to complete the prestigious quartet. Could Broadway be her next venture?
