Democratic Concerns Over Graham Platner’s Background
Democratic leaders in Maine are expressing increased concern about Graham Platner, the leading Senate candidate for the Democratic Primary. Worries are rising over his vulnerabilities in the general election due to new revelations about his personal history.
The New York Times reported troubling accounts from several women who dated Platner. One woman claimed that Platner had acted in threatening or intimidating ways, including grabbing or yanking her. Additionally, she revealed that he was aware of a tattoo on his chest, which resembled a Nazi symbol during their relationship years ago. Other former girlfriends stated that they felt safe with him.
These revelations emerge amidst previous controversies such as the tattoo issue, offensive online comments, and inappropriate messages sent to women outside his marriage. This increasing scrutiny is causing Democrats to worry about the potential for further damaging disclosures about Platner in the future.
Reactions to Platner’s Controversies
Democratic figures are responding cautiously. Senator Maggie Hassan from New Hampshire stated that the reports are serious and warrant scrutiny. Other Democrats chose to sidestep questions about Platner or minimize fears.
Platner, who is likely to win the Democratic primary, addressed the issues on MS NOW. He admitted to problematic behavior after his military service but denied physically harming his ex-girlfriend. Platner also claimed that he was unaware until recently that his tattoo resembled Nazi imagery. He has since covered it up.
