Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings has announced the end of his campaign for Florida governor following his diagnosis of prostate cancer. This decision significantly reshapes the Democratic field, leaving former Congressman David Jolly as the most prominent contender from the party.

Demings was one of two Democrats polling competitively against the likely Republican nominee Byron Donalds. During his final State of the County address, Demings disclosed his health status and his plan to focus on treatment. He stated, “I received some bad news from my doctor, who confirmed that I have prostate cancer.” He intends to complete his term as mayor before his tenure ends in November.

Before ending his campaign, Demings had performed slightly better than Jolly in independent polls. A survey from Stetson University’s Center for Public Opinion Research showed Donalds leading Demings 46% to 42%, compared to 47% to 40% against Jolly. Echelon Insights presented similar results, indicating that Demings’ presence resonated with undecided voters potentially crucial for November’s election.

With Demings stepping down, David Jolly emerges as the key remaining Democratic candidate. Jolly is a former Republican congressman with financial hurdles compared to Donalds, who has amassed over $67 million. Jolly has raised approximately $5 million, far surpassing Demings’ $660,000 before suspending his campaign.

Demings was a significant figure due to his ties to Central Florida and an extensive public service record, including roles as Orlando police chief, Orange County sheriff, and mayor. His involvement kept the race competitive despite Florida’s Republican lean.

Florida remains leaning Republican, yet surveys from Stetson and Echelon highlight dynamics keeping the race competitive. Partisan loyalty is strong, with over 85% backing their nominee. Independents are largely undecided, particularly in the governor’s race, historically having lower turnout rates.

Economic issues take precedence with nearly 40% of voters identifying cost of living and inflation as critical concerns, overshadowing immigration, education, or abortion.

Demings’ departure necessitates a strategic shift within the Democratic camp, particularly in Central Florida where his recognition was strong. This also provides independents different candidate options. For Donalds, it removes a slightly stronger polling competitor, yet both Democrats had kept the competition tight within single digits.
