President Donald Trump has selected Brian Johnson as the new director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). This decision marks the appointment of a familiar ally and financial services executive for Trump’s administration. Johnson previously served as the bureau’s deputy director under Kathy Kraninger, wielding significant influence in shaping the agency’s priorities.
Following his departure from the CFPB in 2020, Johnson held positions at Patomak Global Partners and later became a senior executive at Capital One. If the Senate confirms him, Johnson will assume leadership of a bureau that has been largely inactive since Trump reinstated Russell Vought as acting director. Vought’s role has been temporary, with efforts mainly focused on dismantling previous initiatives.
The CFPB was established following the 2008 financial crisis. It functions as an independent regulator with extensive authority over consumer financial products and services. Since its inception, Republicans have aimed to limit the agency’s influence, criticizing its centralized power and minimal accountability to Congress.
Johnson has openly critiqued the CFPB’s activities, especially during the tenure of Rohit Chopra, President Joe Biden’s nominee. Despite his criticisms, Johnson’s views differ from Vought, who has expressed a desire to see the bureau abolished. Johnson, in a 2023 testimony to the House Financial Services Committee, stated the bureau is “ripe for reform” and believes in its potential for positive impact when managed correctly.
Lindsey Johnson, unrelated to Brian Johnson, is the president of the Consumer Bankers Association. She acknowledges Brian’s extensive background in consumer protection policy.
The nomination now moves to the Senate Banking Committee. Senator Elizabeth Warren, a strong supporter of the bureau and its founding, has been openly critical of Johnson’s nomination. She expressed concerns about him continuing Vought’s approach, stating, “Russ Vought can no longer serve as Donald Trump’s hatchet man at the CFPB. So here comes the next hatchet man to try to finish the job.”
