Honoring Willis Reed: A Legacy That Fuels the Knicks’ Current Quest

3 weeks ago 0

Gale Reed witnessed an unforgettable comeback on Wednesday night. Seated in Madison Square Garden with Bill Bradley and Earl Monroe, she remembered her late husband, Willis Reed. Known as “The Captain” of the New York Knicks, Willis had once described the deafening roar when he faced Wilt Chamberlain in 1970. ‘I’ve never heard a roar like that before,’ Willis had said. On Thursday, Gale understood. ‘Now I know that sound,’ she said.

As the Knicks erased the San Antonio Spurs’ 29-point lead in Game 4, Gale wore Willis’ signed jersey. Earlier, a fan questioned its authenticity in an elevator. Gale assured him of its legitimacy. Sitting behind her at the game, the fan realized who she was. Gale was there to honor Willis, a Hall of Famer who believed playoffs were a different battle. ‘Willis always said playoffs were a totally different ballgame,’ Gale remarked.

Despite her faith, the game looked grim as the Knicks struggled. Yet, like many times before, they achieved an incredible comeback. Gale’s thoughts turned to the 1970 NBA Finals, when Willis pushed through injury to lead the Knicks to victory. ‘The needle was so long it was ridiculous,’ Willis had told Gale of his pre-game injections. His determination inspired his teammates. ‘If Willis didn’t come out,’ Walt Frazier said, ‘we knew we weren’t winning.’

Gale and Willis’ relationship began over four decades ago, sparked at a New York nightclub owned by Tommie Agee and Cleon Jones. Married in 1983, Willis had a flourishing coaching career and later took management roles in the NBA. Gale remembered their country life near Bernice, Louisiana, where Willis enjoyed hunting and fishing.

In 2023, after 40 years together, Gale lost Willis to heart issues and complications from amyloidosis. Despite his celebrity, Willis was humble. He valued honesty and simplicity, often seen in his choice of a Ford pickup over luxury cars. ‘He was so humble,’ Gale said, reflecting on her husband’s character.

Even after retiring, Willis remained loyal to the Knicks. He believed they would win the 1994 championship, never imagining the title drought’s length. Now, with the Knicks close to a title, Gale has a strong bond with the current team. She finds similarities between Jalen Brunson’s leadership and Willis’ legacy. ‘I’ve seen how close these players seem to be,’ Gale remarked, comparing them to her husband’s teammates in the past.

Gale plans to stay in New York for a potential Game 6. She’s eager for the Knicks to win at home but cares deeply for the team regardless. Seeing their success resonates with the spirit of the team Willis loved. As she looks up at his No. 19 in Madison Square Garden’s rafters, Gale feels the absence of Willis courtside but holds onto his legacy as the Knicks strive for glory once more.
