I was always active, and running was my passion before becoming a mom. I enjoyed the freedom of running marathons and half marathons, feeling at my peak fitness level before pregnancy.
Upon learning I was expecting, my focus shifted to my baby’s health. I adapted my routine, continuing to run but not as intensely. After giving birth in June 2025, my plan to quickly resume running faced unexpected obstacles.
Unexpected Challenges Post-Delivery
I went to the hospital hoping for a natural birth, but ended up having a cesarean section after a prolonged labor without progress. Recovery was complicated by a lack of sensation in my left side. Doctors cautiously diagnosed a likely peroneal nerve injury, attributing it to the lengthy labor.
Finding myself unable to move my left foot was a shock, especially from a marathon runner’s perspective.
The physical and emotional toll was significant. As a first-time mom, I needed support for both recovery and daily tasks. My husband and parents were vital in helping me manage during this time.
Therapy and Small Victories
I started physical therapy immediately, attending sessions twice weekly to aid healing. Core stabilization and exercises to relieve nerve pressure were key. Additionally, chiropractic care offered limited relief, whereas acupuncture made a notable difference quickly.
Gradually, I began putting weight on my left leg, though recovery was gradual. My dedication to therapy and self-care paid off. Doctors encouraged patience, and I remained hopeful about regaining my strength.
At 14 weeks postpartum, I managed my first run. It was deliberate to avoid injury, yet it marked a huge step in my recovery. Completing a 16-week training block led to running a half marathon nearly a year after my C-section, marking a significant achievement.
A Personal Journey Shared
My experience is unique; it’s not common for C-sections to cause nerve damage. Though some sensation loss remains, it reminds me of the challenges overcome.
Last year, I feared permanent loss of my former self. Today, I run over 13 miles and feel empowered. Sharing my journey on social media, I hope to inspire other moms, emphasizing patience and self-belief.
