On July 4, 2026, America 250 will bury a historic time capsule on Independence Mall in Philadelphia. Rosie Rios, a spokesperson for America 250, announced the inclusion of various items chosen to encapsulate America’s story for future generations.
The time capsule holds a pocket Constitution signed by Supreme Court Justices, a crystal from the Times Square 2026 New Year’s Eve ball drop, and a special NFL-America250 coin. These items aim to represent the nation’s history and legacy.
The capsule is a 900-pound, stainless steel, waterproof vessel designed to last. Housing almost 200 items, this capsule is a snapshot of American life, combining government, culture, and everyday contributions.
Rosie Rios said, ‘We ensured representation from all three branches of government, the 50 states, D.C., the five territories, and everyday Americans.’
The capsule’s lid weighs 1,100 pounds, resulting in a total weight of roughly a ton. It will be buried at Philadelphia’s Independence National Historical Park. This location was chosen for its historical significance as the birthplace of the nation.
Rios emphasized the City of Brotherly Love as the ideal site. ‘In 250 years, that’s where you’ll go to unbury it,’ Rios explained, projecting into the future when the capsule will be reopened in 2276.
Among other items, the time capsule includes a message in a bottle from Coca-Cola, an American flag from the 2026 Rose Parade, and a capstone that will be displayed in Philadelphia. These artifacts are intended to preserve the nation’s culture and identity for the benefit of future generations.
Rios expressed hope that future descendants will appreciate these items as a glimpse into the past. Taylor Penley, an associate editor with Fox News, provided coverage of this event.
