The Chicago White Sox faced a challenging 12-2 defeat against the New York Yankees, marking their toughest loss since the season opener against the Milwaukee Brewers. Ace Davis Martin acknowledged the rapid decline of the game during the second inning, as defensive errors by Chase Meidroth and Jacob Gonzalez paved the way for the Yankees to secure four runs. Martin couldn’t recover and departed after just one out in the six-run fourth inning.
Martin expressed the significance of playing in New York, noting the importance of adjusting to high-pressure environments. He emphasized the team’s determination to learn and improve for potential playoff games on the road in September or October. “It’s a process. It’s June. Continue to learn and make these adjustments,” Martin stated.
During the game, infielder Luisangel Acuña took the mound in the eighth inning, throwing 40 mph curves, including one that resulted in a home run by José Caballero, marking the Yankees’ fourth of the game. Manager Will Venable stressed the need for improvement, saying, “Obviously, some things in there we have to clean up.”
Martin’s statistics for the night were concerning, having been charged with nine runs on eight hits and three walks over 3 1/3 innings, causing his ERA to spike from 2.41 to 3.31. Despite prior successes, including a shutout win against the Atlanta Braves, Martin’s performance against the Yankees was labeled an anomaly by Venable. Martin remained optimistic, recalling his recovery from a previous poor outing against the Minnesota Twins. “I’ve done it once before after the Twins outing, and I can do it again,” he affirmed.
Offensively, the White Sox struggled, with just two hits after Andrew Benintendi’s solo homer in the first inning. Tristan Peters provided the second hit in the sixth, but by then the Sox were significantly behind at 11-1.
The unraveling began when Meidroth missed a tag at second base, resulting in J.C. Escarra’s double, followed by Gonzalez’s misjudgment which left Meidroth without a throw option after Anthony Volpe’s hit. Venable regarded these moments as learning experiences for Gonzalez, who is adapting to playing first base.
Martin expressed his disappointment at not supporting his teammates adequately, focusing on the need to find his rhythm again. He stated, “I pride myself in, if guys are going to pick me up, I’ve got to pick them up.” Though frustrated, he remained confident that he could return to form, saying, “Most nights I feel like I’m going to pick them up. It’s just a bad night. Go to sleep. Wake up. New day tomorrow.”
