CENTCOM Clarifies Conditions on USS Abraham Lincoln

The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) highlighted the mental health status aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, emphasizing its performance amid allegations of poor conditions. The aircraft carrier, part of the war effort with Iran for over 260 days, has faced complaints about supply issues, plumbing, and threats from crew members. Officials denied these allegations and announced the carrier’s upcoming replacement.

Adm. Brad Cooper, commander of CENTCOM, visited the carrier and praised its mental health record. Among the Navy’s 11 active aircraft carriers, the Lincoln ranks low in mental health case numbers. Cooper shared his observations on social media, expressing pride in the crew’s camaraderie, teamwork, and resilience.

“My time aboard USS Abraham Lincoln was awe-inspiring. You would beam with pride witnessing their resilience,” Cooper stated.

In a Wall Street Journal op-ed, Cooper explained that many issues, such as food shortages and hot water, were outdated concerns that have been resolved. He interacted with junior officers who affirmed these improvements. Cooper noted that despite improvements, extended deployments remain challenging, affecting sailors in diverse ways.

Cooper credited the ship’s leadership for prioritizing crew resilience and ensuring mental health receives attention comparable to physical and spiritual health. He commended the Chief Petty Officers Mess for their role in this effort.

“I applaud Lincoln’s leadership for making mental health and crew resilience a priority,” Cooper said.

President Donald Trump announced the Lincoln’s replacement with another aircraft carrier en route to the Middle East. The Wall Street Journal identified the USS George Washington as the replacement from the Pacific.

Reports of the Lincoln’s conditions raised complaints regarding food, water contamination, plumbing issues, and increased suicidal thoughts. Sean Parnell, a veteran with deployment experience, criticized media coverage of the situation. He described it as misrepresenting legitimate deployment challenges for headlines.
