U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has relocated detainees from a detention center in the Florida Everglades known as “Alligator Alcatraz.” An ICE spokesperson announced the move, highlighting safety concerns related to the hurricane season.
“For the safety of the illegal alien detainees, we transferred them to other facilities,” the spokesperson said in a statement.
Last month, CBS News Miami reported that the state of Florida’s hired companies were informed about the closure of Alligator Alcatraz, with approximately 1,400 detainees expected to be moved. Secretary of Homeland Security Markwayne Mullin stated the agency had no immediate plans to close the facility, but acknowledged its weather-related vulnerabilities.
We have plans in case of a natural emergency such as a wildfire or hurricane, to have to be able to bring it down and pull the individuals out,” Mullin said.
Alligator Alcatraz, located on an unused airstrip in the Everglades, opened last year. The Trump administration aimed to expand ICE’s detention capacity to increase arrests and deportations. Detainees at the facility were kept in large air-conditioned tents, with bunk beds and cells made from chain-link fences.
The administration described Alligator Alcatraz as a cost-effective solution for housing people accused of illegal entry into the U.S. Some officials suggested its austere setup may deter illegal immigration. During a visit, President Trump remarked, “We’re going to teach them how to run away from an alligator if they escape prison.” Former Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem warned that those who do not “self-deport” might end up in such conditions.
The center faced strong criticism from immigration advocates, environmental groups, and a local Native American tribe. Critics pointed to inhumane conditions such as inadequate food, nonfunctional toilets, and limited access to legal representation. The Trump administration denied allegations of inadequate conditions.
