Recently, President Donald Trump endorsed two candidates in the South Carolina gubernatorial runoff. He supported both South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson and Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette. Trump’s decision to back both candidates is unique but not unprecedented.
Trump expressed his decision on Truth Social, stating, “I can’t hurt one of them by only Endorsing the other, so, therefore, I am going to Endorse, for Governor of South Carolina, both Pam Evette and Alan Wilson!” This endorsement is an attempt to maintain influence in the GOP race as both candidates hold significant positions within the state.
Trump has emphasized his backing of Evette, who is supported by Gov. Henry McMaster, a close ally. Meanwhile, Wilson has gained support from notable figures after advancing to the runoff. The race is significant as it showcases Trump’s influence on Republican nominating contests.
During the primary, Evette led the results but did not secure a majority, leading to a runoff with Wilson. Other contenders included Reps. Nancy Mace and Ralph Norman and businessman Rom Reddy. After the primary, Mace and Norman endorsed Wilson. Sen. Ted Cruz also supported Wilson.
The runoff debate highlighted heated exchanges between Wilson and Evette, with both candidates attacking each other’s records. Wilson emphasized his role as attorney general and experience as a combat veteran and prosecutor. Evette portrayed herself as an outsider supported by Trump and criticized Wilson as a long-term politician.
The GOP runoff winner will face Democratic nominee Jermaine Johnson in the general election. Given South Carolina’s political history, the GOP candidate is favored to win.
Trump’s endorsement power has shown mixed results in recent primaries. His backed candidates have had successes and failures, indicating varying degrees of influence. In some races, like in Indiana, Louisiana, and Texas, his endorsements helped candidates win nominations. However, in Iowa, the endorsement did not propel Rep. Randy Feenstra to victory.
Despite this, recent wins in the GOP gubernatorial primary and for Sen. Lindsey Graham in South Carolina demonstrate Trump’s strong support. Graham, aligned with Trump, won against five primary opponents.
Another notable result occurred in Georgia, where Trump-backed Rep. Mike Collins succeeded in a Senate runoff. Meanwhile, in Alabama, Rep. Barry Moore, endorsed by Trump, defeated his opponent in a Senate runoff, underscoring Trump’s continuing influence.
