Morocco Secures Victory Against Scotland
Morocco edged closer to the World Cup’s last 32 with a narrow 1-0 win over Scotland at Gillette Stadium. A significant Scottish fan presence couldn’t prevent Morocco from taking an early lead. Ismael Saibari scored the fastest goal of the tournament so far, with a powerful shot past Angus Gunn just 69 seconds in.
In the first half, Saibari and Brahim Diaz were instrumental in keeping Morocco dominant. After the break, Scotland upped their game but couldn’t equalize despite strong penalty appeals for a foul on John McGinn.
As Scotland wraps up a week in Boston, they head to Miami for a Wednesday (June 24) clash with Brazil. On the same day, Morocco will play Haiti in Atlanta. The Athletic’s prediction model indicates Morocco’s probability of advancing exceeds 99 percent. Scotland has a 72 percent chance of qualifying, even with a loss to Brazil.
World Cup Group Standings and Future Matches
In this first 48-team World Cup format, the top two teams from each of the 12 groups progress, alongside the eight best third-placed sides. Morocco leads Group C with four points, followed by Scotland with three, while Brazil faces Haiti later in the day.
Group winners meet Group F’s runners-up in Houston. Conversely, runners-up head to Monterrey, Mexico, to face Group F winners. Both matches occur on June 29. A third-placed team’s progression depends on outcomes in other groups.
Scotland Fans Boo Achraf Hakimi
A significant number of Scotland fans at Gillette Stadium booed Morocco’s captain, Achraf Hakimi, whenever he touched the ball. Initially a mild background noise, the boos grew louder, especially when Hakimi went to take a corner in the 20th minute, and again when he impeded Kieran Tierney in the 39th minute.
Hakimi faces trial on rape charges from an incident allegedly occurring in February 2023. Accused by a 24-year-old woman, Hakimi has consistently denied any wrongdoing. In a pre-match statement, he expressed readiness to address these charges in court.
Ismael Saibari’s Spectacular Scoring
Ismael Saibari continues to score impressive goals. In Morocco’s opening game against Brazil, he chipped in a goal following a precise pass from Brahim Diaz. Saibari’s goal against Scotland, again assisted by Diaz, was a masterpiece. Scotland’s defensive lapse allowed Diaz to send a clever pass to Saibari, who executed a precise finish beyond Angus Gunn’s reach.
This form has reportedly attracted Bayern Munich, who are negotiating his transfer from PSV.
Controversial Missed Penalty for Scotland
Chances were scarce for Scotland, reflected in an expected goals (xG) total of 0.2 an hour into the game. Their strongest moment came when John McGinn appeared fouled by Issa Diop in the 48th minute. McGinn outpaced Morocco’s defense, yet Diop’s clumsy challenge was dismissed by both the referee and VAR.
Interestingly, Scotland benefited similarly in their previous win over Haiti when Grant Hanley’s handball went unpunished. McGinn’s appeal seemed stronger than another late claim from Scott McTominay.
Scotland’s Path Forward
The group stage poses challenges for Scotland but losing narrowly to Morocco wasn’t a major setback. Coach Steve Clarke emphasized managing defeats, stating, “Don’t get humped,” before group play.
In this format, finishing as one of the better third-placed teams could be sufficient for progression. With Morocco and Brazil in the top ten globally, beating Haiti was essential.
The 1-0 loss leaves Scotland with a neutral goal difference. While a win or draw against Brazil would secure advancement, a narrow loss would also keep them in contention. A 2-0 loss gives them a 72 percent advancement probability, according to model projections. This scenario creates a unique outlook where narrow defeats are not catastrophic.
