Australia Coach Criticizes Refereeing After 2-0 Defeat to U.S.

Australia’s coach, Tony Popovic, expressed his concerns about the officiating following a 2-0 loss to the U.S. in Seattle. ‘I think today was not the best day for the referee,’ Popovic stated post-match.

A significant moment in the game occurred when the U.S. scored their second goal. Initially overturned for offside, a VAR review later confirmed the goal. This decision angered the Australians who believed their goalkeeper was obstructed or that there was an offside.

The U.S. gained the decisive second goal in the 43rd minute through Alex Freeman, son of ex-NFL player Antonio Freeman. His successful header followed a blocked free kick.

Emotions ran high as a skirmish erupted late in the match. Australia’s Harry Souttar and the U.S.’s Folarin Balogun were involved, resulting in yellow cards for both and for Australia’s Jacob Italiano.

In total, the game saw seven yellow cards: Australia received four, and the U.S. received three.

Following the match, Popovic urgently approached German referee Felix Zwayer. Zwayer experienced a cramp near the match’s end, requiring assistance from players to stretch his leg.

Despite the controversy, Popovic acknowledged the American team’s performance and noted his team appeared ‘sluggish,’ particularly in the first half. ‘We looked heavy-legged and lost every duel,’ he remarked. ‘Conceding two soft goals at this level made it hard to recover.’

The result places the U.S. at the top of Group D with six points. Australia remains in second with three points. Paraguay and Turkey, both winless, will compete next to influence the group’s outcome.

If Paraguay defeats or ties Turkey, the U.S. will secure the group victory and a favorable draw for the Round of 32. Their match is set to begin at 11 p.m. ET.
