President Donald Trump intensified tensions with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni at the recent G7 summit. Trump alleged that Meloni repeatedly requested a photo with him during the meeting, criticizing Italy’s cooperation in the Iran war.
“Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni asked, over and over, for a picture with me during the G-7 meeting in France,” Trump expressed on his social media platform.
Meloni responded to Trump’s claims, labeling them “completely fabricated.” The controversy prompted Italy’s foreign minister to cancel a planned visit to the U.S., demonstrating support for Meloni.
Trump accused Italy of refusing cooperation during the Iran conflict by not allowing U.S. access to Italian military bases. This decision is attributed to Italy’s constitutional restrictions and local opposition.
Meloni defended her actions, stating her priority is protecting Italy’s national interest, which she believes is independent of Trump.
“My popularity depends on my ability to defend Italy’s national interest,” Meloni declared in an Instagram post.
Trump, in a social media post, expressed dissatisfaction with Meloni’s stance. He argued the U.S. supports Italy and criticized NATO allies for inadequate defense spending.
He claimed Italy’s refusal to permit American bombers access to bases in Sicily, pending parliamentary approval, was due to domestic opposition.
Trump asserted Meloni desires renewed friendship with the U.S. following Iran conflict resolutions.
